Data Visualization & UX – Mark Schindler and Bang Wong

Data Visualization is about helping people gain knowledge from data. The focus of this workshop is on approaches to turn data into actionable insights, combining heuristics for visual analytics with techniques from user-experience design. Participants will learn how to choose and create data visualizations driven by user-oriented objectives, through presentations and an in-class exercise. The class exercise will be conducted in small groups. Workshop class size is limited to 60 participants, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Presenter Bios

Bang Wong’s work focuses on the effective communication, presentation and exploration of complex biomedical data. He is the creative director of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard where he leads the Visualization Skunkworks, an initiative that brings together scientists to explore and find visualization solutions to meet the analytical challenges posed by data generated at unprecedented scale and resolution. He is developing software tools that will democratize large­ scale data enabling the research community to make new fundamental discoveries.

Mark Schindler is co-founder and Managing Director of GroupVisual.io, a Cambridge, MA consultancy that specializes in making Big Data consumable for human beings through the design of data visualization and data-driven user experiences. For over 15 years, he has designed business analytics and visualization systems for clients like Johnson & Johnson, GE, and Eli Lilly.
